SPAIN WAIT ON VILLA

David Villa will have until the last possible moment to prove his fitness for Spain’s European Championship defence this summer. Vicente Del Bosque will give the Barca forward every chance to make it to the Euros but understands that if he does decide to take him the Poland and Ukraine other members of the squad could be left rather upset.

Villa has not played since breaking his leg playing for Barca in the Club World Cup in December. He is now nearing a return to competitive action and despite his lack of match practice his club manager, Guardiola is urging Spain to take the risk and take the striker with them as they attempt to retain their crown as European champions.

Del Bosque understands that it will be a huge blow to whoever misses out should Villa be taken with the Spanish squad. He does though also understand that he and his team have “an obligation and conviction to wait until the last minute” when deciding who gets to go, Villa or one of their other collection of world class strikers.

The former Real Madrid coach has made it clear that his decision will be based solely on what he feels is right for his country and for his team. He will make his personal feelings redundant and ensure that using “both the head and the heart” he will make the decision that is the right one. “The National Team comes first” is the mantra he will be following in making all of his decisions before and throughout the championships.

Spain will take on Ireland, Croatia and Italy in their group. None of those games will be easy and it will not get any easier after that, should they get out of their group a game against one of England, Sweden, France or Ukraine  group will await in the first knock out game.

CAVANI RULES OUT EPL

Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani has all but dashed the hopes of English Premier League side Chelsea Football Club to sign him in the summer from Italian giants Napoli.

The 25 year old striker has been in the form of his life over the last couple of seasons and he is one of the main reasons for the meteoric rise of the Napoli team, glorified by Argentina legend Diego Maradona during the late 1980s from the abyss of playing in the second tier of Italian football to a UEFA Champions League hopeful in just three seasons.

Cavani has been regularly linked with English Premier League clubs for the last year or so with the names of Chelsea and Manchester City being mentioned frequently as well as that of Spanish giants Real Madrid but Cavani has dashed the hopes of all by stating that he is ready to commit his future to the Naples side and he believes that the side has what it takes to become a major force in a few years.

Cavani was part of Uruguay National Football Team that embarked on a dream run in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa where they finished in 4th position and also won the Copa America of 2011. He has already scored 10 goals in just 36 appearances for the two time World Champions and is regarded as one of the deadliest strikers in world football at the moment with brute force, skill and finishing ability.

FOCUS ON: MARCELO SALAS

The World Cup isn’t just about Brazil, or the rest of the big guns, and their multi-million pound football stars. Sometimes its about the lesser lights – the types of clubs who glimpse the limelight just once every 30 years or so, when somehow a generation comes together and makes the magic happen.

One of the key members for the Chile national side, certainyl up until 2005, was the Lazio and Inter world-beater Marcelo Salas. Had he had a few higher quality team-mates other than Ivan Zamorano) Chile could have had a fantastic chance of making it into thte knockout stages – after all they managed to beat England!

Maradona vs England 1986

Ok, we’ve tried to avoid it so far, but its time to turn our attention to one of the most contentious (and well remembered) matches of all time – England vs Argentina in World Cup 1986.

The whole nation was watching a little known diminutive Argentinean single-handedly reduced 50 million people to shouting and screaming at their television sets. Yes, thats right, when Maradona sealed the fate of the nation using what was later to become known as ‘the Hand of God’.

The sad matter of fact is that Diego simply didn’t need to use such underhand tactics – he had already walked his way through the entire first-team to score the first goal! Oh well. This still hurts!
